Performance artist, poet and musician Saul Williams will lead the cast of incoming Broadway musical “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” which draws from the Tupac Shakur catalog for its score but does not tell a story based on Shakur’s life.
Tony winner Tonya Pinkins (“Jelly’s Last Jam,” “Caroline or Change”) also will appear in the tuner, alongside a roster of thesps that also includes Christopher Jackson (“In the Heights,” “After Midnight”), John Earl Jelks (“Radio Golf”) and Saycon Sengbloh (“Motown,” “Fela!”).
Penned by Todd Kreidler, “Holler” centers on the struggles and triumphs of a group of inner city residents. Kenny Leon, who recently won raves for his revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” starring Denzel Washington, helms.
Musical is one of the first offerings of Broadway’s 2014-15 season, starting previews May 29 at the Palace Theater ahead of a June 19 opening.
