Broadway Box Office: Ten Shows Top $1 Million in Weekly Grosses

New house records for “Beautiful” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” were among the highlights of a big week at the Broadway box office, which saw a whopping 10 shows top $1 million in weekly grosses.

Perennial powerhouses “The Lion King” ($2,431,017), “Wicked” ($1,966,367) and “The Book of Mormon” ($1,817,551) topped the charts for the week ending July 20. Each was up week to week, but that saw was something that could be said about all 10 titles in the week’s millionaires club.

Carole King bio “Beautiful” ($1,300,153, pictured) set a house record for the 12th time in its 36-week run and was No. 6 for the week, and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” ($1,088,660) hit a box office record for a fifth time, ranking ninth. Both shows played t0 more than 100% attendance capacity, as did “A Gentleman’s Guide to Murder” ($957,145), No. 7 “Matilda” ($1,167,031) and “Book of Mormon.”

Also collecting $1 million last week were No. 4 “Aladdin” ($1,542,832), No. 5 “Kinky Boots” ($1,314,190), No. 8 “The Phantom of Opera” ($1,114,417) and No. 10 “Les Miserables” ($1,072,101).

Two shows shuttered on Sunday but showed nice week-over-week gains. Daniel Radcliffe-fronted “The Cripple of Inishmaan” ($740,711) gained $144,081 (or 24%), while tuner “Holler If Ya Hear Me” ($266,984) picked up an additional $112,037 (or 72%).

The James Franco-Chris O’Dowd starrer “Of Mice and Men” ($929,343) rose $66,481 (or 8%) in its penultimate week.

Overall, box office was very healthy, with cumulative sales climbing more than $2 million week-to-week to $27,867,272 for 29 shows on the boards. Overall attendance (261,209) was also up (from the previous week’s 243,337), as was the average price paid per ticket ($106.69, up from $105.35 the week ending July 13 and from $104.85 for the comparable frame a year ago).
