Wide Nabs Quartet of Toronto Players

PARIS– Wide Management has snatched up a quartet of movies set to play at Toronto: “The Lesson,” “Margarita, with a Straw,” “Foreign Body” and “The Narrow Frame of Midnight.”

Set in a small Bulgarian town, “The Lesson” (“Urok”) turns on hard-working teacher, Nadezhda (Margita Gosheva), who is plagued by financial woes and struggling to avoid the looming foreclosure on her house. Helmed by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, “The Lesson” will premiere in the contemporary world cinema section.

Helmed by Shonali Bose, “Margarita, with a Straw,” which is also scheduled to premiere in the contemporary world cinema section, is a romantic coming-of-age drama following a Delhi University student and aspiring writer suffering from cerebral palsy who leaves India for New York where she falls for a young activist. “‘Margarita, With a Straw’ is an uplifting and modern film that deals with serious issues in a light-hearted way, in the same vein as ‘The Lunchbox,'” explained Wide Management boss Loic Magneron, adding that Bose is part of India’s new generation of filmmakers who aim to reach the international market.

Meanwhile, Krzysztof Zanussi’s “Foreign Body” (“Obce Cialo”), slated for the Masters section, centers around a dashing young Italian man who, while in Poland, who gets caught between two women – an aspiring nun and a ruthless career woman — who represent aspects of the contemporary Polish society. Zanussi is one of Poland’s most acclaimed filmmakers. His best-known credits include “The Constant Fear” which won Cannes’ Jury and Ecumenical Jury nods. Magneron says that “due to the status of Zanussi, ‘Foreign Body’ is a patrimony film that provides distributors with a pre-established marketing angle.”

“The Narrow Frame of Midnight” (“Itar el-layl”), a Discovery section player directed by Tala Hadid, weaves the destinies of three people: A Moroccan-Iraqi writer searching for his brother, the lover he left behind and a young orphan on the run. The Moroccan/U.K./French co-production stars Khalid Abdalla and Marie-Josée Croze.
