Weinstein Co. Extends Free Yahoo Streaming of ‘One Chance’ Movie, After Meager Box Office Take

The Weinstein Co.’s biopic “One Chance” generated just $32,800 in its U.S. theatrical debut this weekend, after the film was available for free on Yahoo 10 days before it hit theaters.

Now, TWC has reupped its deal with Yahoo to extend the free streaming window until Nov. 9 for “One Chance,” which tells the true story an amateur opera singer who won the first season of the “Britain’s Got Talent” competition show. Originally, the Yahoo deal was set to expire Oct. 10 with the theatrical release.

“Our fans love the movie and the unique opportunity to experience it online through Yahoo,” said Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Weinstein Co. “After watching the film on Yahoo myself, I see how Yahoo was able to build such an engaged audience for the film. We’re thrilled with the incredible job Yahoo did in marketing the movie.”

The film, which opened domestically Oct. 10, grossed $32,800 over the weekend at 43 screens, according to Box Office Mojo.

Yahoo is not divulging viewing numbers for “One Chance,” but a rep said it is “pleased with the performance.”

TWC’s deal with Yahoo to stream “One Chance” for free starting Sept. 30 irritated theater owners, which have fought attempts by studios to distribute movies via digital channels while they’re still in the cinemas (or, worse, prior to theatrical premiere, as in this case).

Separately, Weinstein Co. last month inked a deal with Netflix to release the sequel to “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” simultaneously on the SVOD service as well as select Imax theaters worldwide. In response, major U.S. theater chains said they would refuse to show the film.

Terms of the Yahoo-Weinstein deal for “One Chance” have not been disclosed. Yahoo is serving pre-roll and mid-roll video ads in the movie for U.S. users on its Yahoo Screen service, on the web at screen.yahoo.com/onechance and via other devices.

“One Chance” stars James Corden and Julie Walters; David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada”) directed. Produced by Mike Menchell, Simon Cowell, Brad Weston and Kris Tjykier, with executive producers Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein and Steve Whitney.
