The drama, set in a small town in California’s San Joaquin Valley in 1942, follows a teenage boy, who aspires to be the fastest bicycle messenger ever. His life is changed as he delivers messages to the town’s residents during WWII.

Erik Jendresen (“Band of Brothers”) wrote the screenplay, based on William Saroyan’s novel “The Human Comedy.”

Ryan will also star as the boy’s widowed mother, along with Jack Quaid, Sam Shepard and Melanie Griffith. Producers are Janet Brenner and Laura Ivey with Hanks and Playtone partner Gary Goetzman exec producing.

The Exchange began selling foreign rights at Berlin.

Ryan and Hanks have appeared in three films together — “Joe and the Volcano,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.” Hanks recently completed shooting “A Hologram for the King” and will star in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Cold War thriller.
