Tokyo Filmex Selects Nine Asian Pictures for Competition

TOKYO — The Tokyo Filmex festival has set nine pictures for its international competition, including Asaf Korman’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry “Next to Her,” and Park Jungbum’s “Alive,” which screened in competition at Locarno.

Other highlights of the festival, unspooling Nov. 20-30 in Tokyo, include Naji Abu Nowar’ s “Theeb,” winner of Best Director prize in Venice Horizons,  P and Jung July’s “A Girl at My Door,” selected for this year’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.

The only Japanese film in the competition is Izumi Takahashi’s “Dari Marusan,” a drama about two outsiders who find each other in present-day Japan. His previous pic, “I Am Not the World You Want to Change,” premiered at the 2012 Filmex.

The jury is chaired by Chinese director and Filmex regular Jia Zhangke, with Japanese cinematographer Katsumi Yanagijima, Japanese programmer Yuko Nakamura, Taiwanese critic Chang Yann and US producer/publicist Richard Lormand assisting.

As previously announced, the festival will open with Shinya Tsukamoto WWII drama “Fires on the Plain” and close with David Cronenberg’s “Maps to the Stars.” Two early Cronenberg pics, “Stereo” (1969) and “Crimes of the Future” (1970), will also screen. Another previously announced special section is devoted to three Shochiku Nouvelle Vague films from the key year 1960.

Filmex will also host the Talents Tokyo 2014 workshop for young Asian directors and producers, which runs Nov.24-29.
