‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Leads Empire Awards Contest

LONDON — “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” leads the contest for the Jameson Empire Awards, which are voted for by readers of Empire magazine. The pic had seven nominations, followed by “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with five.

The shortlist includes Oscar runners such as “12 Years a Slave,” which picked up six nominations, “Captain Phillips” (five noms) and “Gravity” (four noms).

The best film award will be fought out between “12 Years a Slave,” “Captain Phillips,” “Gravity,” “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

British director Paul Greengrass will receive the Empire Inspiration Award at the ceremony for his work on the “Bourne” trilogy, as well as “Captain Phillips,” for which he is nominated in the director category. In that contest, he spars with fellow Brits Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) and Edgar Wright (“The World’s End”), alongside Alfonso Cuaron (“Gravity”) and Peter Jackson (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”).

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on March 30.
