HONG KONG — Thailand has selected comedy romance “Teacher’s Diary” to represent the country in the foreign-language Academy Awards category.

The film, directed by Nithiwat Tharatorn, is a story about a former wrestler who takes up an unusual position as a class teacher in an isolated rural spot. There he draws inspiration from the diary left behind by a particularly dedicated predecessor.

Selection was made by Thailand’s Federation of National Film Associations and announced on Monday.

“Diary” was produced by Jorkwang Films and released by local major GMM Tai Hub on March 20.

Thailand has submitted 18 films to the Oscars since 1984. So far none have received nominations.
