SXSW Winner ‘The Retrieval’ Gets US Distribution

Variance Films has acquired U.S. distribution for Civil War drama “The Retrieval,” which won a grand jury acting prize for Tishuan Scott at South by Southwest.

“The Retrieval” will open in New York City on April 2 and expand April 18.

Producers are Jacob Esquivel and Jason Wehling, and executive producers are Alan Berg (Arts + Labor), Tom Borders (Sixth Street Films), and Sibyl Avery Jackson.

Chris Eska directed from his own script with the story set in 1864, near the end of the Civil War. Ashton Sanders portrays a fatherless 13-year-old boy who survives by working with a white bounty hunter gang. Scott portays a fugitive freedman.

Joe Leydon gave the film a strong review for Variety, describing it as “an outstanding example of regional indie filmmaking accomplished with limited resources and an abundance of skill.”
