Robert Downey Jr., Emma Watson Among Britannia Awards Honorees

Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Emma Watson, Mike Leigh and Dame Judi Dench will be given Britannia Awards at BAFTA Los Angeles ceremonies Oct. 30 at the Beverly Hilton.

The prize salutes “individuals who have dedicated their careers to advancing the art forms of the moving image in the U.S., U.K. and beyond,” according to the org.

Rob Brydon will reprise his role as host, after his successful stint last year. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC America on Nov. 2. The prizes, which are officially called the BAFTA Los Angeles Jaguar Britannia Awards, are  presented by BBC America and United Airlines. In BAFTA’s award season, the Britannias are followed by the Award Season Tea Party in Los Angeles on Jan. 10, and the EE British Academy Film Awards in London on Sunday, Feb. 8.

“There is a long and prolific history of collaboration between the entertainment industries of the United States and United Kingdom, and the BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards are a heartfelt celebration of this fruitful relationship” said BAFTA Los Angeles chairman Nigel Daly. “This year’s honorees are the true definition of excellence. Each have committed themselves to the pursuit of excellence in our craft, serving as inspirations to practitioners on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Downey is the recipient of the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, “which is presented to a unique individual, upon whose work is stamped the indelible mark of authorship and commitment, and who has lifted the craft to new heights,” according to BAFTA LA.

Ruffalo will receive the Britannia Humanitarian Award for his work with Water Defense. He co-founded the non-profit, which is dedicated to using technology and public engagement to keep waterways and drinking water sources free from contamination and industrial degradation.

Watson will be given the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Leigh will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing. Dench has been awarded the 2014 Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment.

Britannia Award co-chairs are Bumble Ward and Deborah Kolar. Proceeds from the ceremony support BAFTA Los Angeles’ ongoing education, scholarship, community outreach and archival projects.
