Peruvian Thesp Salvador del Solar Explores the Past with Directorial Debut

‘Magallanes’ competes at San Sebastian’s Films in Progress

Peru’s Pendulo Films and Tondero Films – the latter one of the key forces behind recent Peruvian blockbusters “Asu Mare” and “At 40” – has teamed up with Cepa Audiovisual, a producer on Argentine-Spanish hit “Seventh Floor,” and Colombia’s Cinerama and Proyectil to co-produce $600,000 drama “Magallanes.”

Drama is Peruvian thesp Salvador del Solar’s directorial debut, best known for his lead role in Francisco Lombardi’s wildly successful 1999 comedy “Pantaleon y las Visitadores” and who next stars in Javier Fuentes-Leon’s “The Vanishing Elephant,” which world preemed in Toronto 2014. Del Solar is a founding partner of both Pendulo and Proyectil.

Vet producer Enid “Pinky” Campos, CEPA’s Felicitas Raffo, and Cinerama’s Felipe Martinez and Tondero’s Miguel Valladares serve as exec producers.

Drama centers on a former soldier played by Mexico’s Damian Alcazar who reunites with a woman (Peru’s Magaly Solier) whose past is inexorably linked to his.

“When serious issues go unresolved, it is very difficult for people to move on,” says Del Solar, who penned the script. “I like to explore the experience of facing this knot; the conflict between both the need and the fear to unravel it.” Christian Meier (Peru), and Federico Luppi (Argentina) also star.

“’Magallanes’ showcases the strength of combined support from Peru’s Ministry of Culture and a slew of major private investors, a proven formula that has allowed us to produce more quality films in Peru,” says Valladares.  Tondero productions “Asu Mare” and “At 40” (“A los 40”), the directorial debut of another thesp, Bruno Ascenzo, were heavily supported by product placement.

“Asu mare!,” helmed by Ricardo Maldonado, reaped an unprecedented $12 million at the local box office last year, beating Peru’s previous all-time B.O. record-holder “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” which earned $9.6 million in 2012. The comedy also knocked off “Pantaleon y las Visitadoras” from its long-standing perch as the highest grossing Peruvian film. It grossed $1.4 million in 1999.

“At 40” posted a total of $6.4 million, making it the fourth biggest pic of all time in Peru, per Jorge Licetti of distrib New Century Films, which also released “Asu Mare” and is currently distributing recent 18th Lima Film Festival top audience awardee “Viejos Amigos,” which has earned $882,000 to date since its mid-August debut.
