One Eyed Takes Argentine Suspense Thriller ‘They Returned’ (EXCLUSIVE)

London-based One Eyed Films has taken international rights to “They Returned,” directed by Argentine Ivan Noel (“¡Primaria!).

Loosely inspired on an event which took place in Memphis during the ’90s, “Returned” centers on the strange disappearance of three children from their small town, and their reappearance three days later in a semi-autistic state. Not even the children themselves are able to help anyone understand what happened. “No clues or signs are left, other than two of them were mutilated,” explained producer, director and composer Noel.

“They Returned” will be the sixth feature by multihyphenate Noel. Helmer plays off a fanbase that helps him finance his low-cost productions.

“Returned’s’” cast includes Jorge Booth, seen in Lucia Puenzo’s “The Fish Child”; Romina Pinto, who appeared in Noel’s “Vuelve”; and Lauro Veron – in his “Limbo.”

“They Returned” is a “thriller with strong supernatural elements, drawing on a political historical context,” explained Betina Goldman, from long-running Latin America and horror specialist One Eyed. “We see great festival and critical recognition potential in the works,” she added.

Pic is set in an authentic and almost-in-ruins hospital in North Argentina built by the German immigrants in the ’20s.

Recent One Eyed slate titles includes Anders Elsrud Hultgreen’s sci-fi movie “Dawn” and Jake Reid’s thriller “The Antwerp Dolls.”

“One of the key points of ‘Returned’ is to demonstrate that evil is not the result of a single person’s actions but rather a string of events, in this case dating right back to a Nazi German presence here, plus present-day social and political corruption, and how people avoid responsibility by pointing the finger at one other,” Noel pointed out.

Noel is scheduled to shoot his next pic, “Burnt Knees,” next February. “Knees” will be an extremely free adaptation of Henry James’ classic “The Turn of the Screw.”

As a production company, One Eyed is developing a project to be directed by Brazilian vet horror helmer Jose Mojica Mojins (“Embodiment of Evil”). It would be the first English-language feature from the cult vet nicknamed “Coffin Joe.” With a working title of “Coffin Joe: The Rising,” pic is seeking co-production partners in Canada and Spain.
