Lava Bear Boards Andy Lau-Starring Chinese Actioner ‘The Bodyguard’

HONG KONG — David Linde’s Lava Bear has joined with Bill Kong’s Edko Films on “The Bodyguard,” an action thriller being directed by Sammo Hung (“Martial Law”).

The film is now in production in Northern China with Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau as one of the co-leads.

The story follows a retired bodyguard (Hung), who has retreated to the frozen wilds, but who is called back into action by a young girl whose father, played by Lau, has been dragged into the local crime world.

The film is set as a co-production between Edko, Irresistible Films, Lava Bear and Focus Films.

Following Zhang Yimou’s “Coming Home,” and his “The Flowers of War,” “Bodyguard” is the third Chinese film to be backed by Lava Bear. Linde and Tory Metzger join as executive producers, while Jennifer Semler, Lava Bear’s VP of production, will also work on the picture.

“It’s intrinsic to Lava Bear that we grow where film is growing, and to do so with talented filmmakers,” said Linde in a prepared statement.

Locations are set to include Suifenhe Shi and Mudangjiang Shi in China’s Heilongjiang Province, and Russia’s Vladivostok.
