HONG KONG — Production is under way on “Detective K: The Labourer’s Daughter,” a sequel to 2011 Korean “Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow.”
The period comedy drama was a hit for producer-distributor Showbox with some 4.38 million ticket sales.
The new pic brings reunites director Kim Sok-yun with lead actors Kim Myeong-min in the title role as bumbling genius detective and Oh Dal-su as his sidekick.
The film is expected to be completed in time for a theatrical release in the family-oriented Lunar New Year period (February) 2015.
The franchise has obvious parallels with “Detective Dee,” the Chinese period crime movie franchise powered by director Tsui Hark, though where “Dee” is loosely based on characters from literature, “Detective K” is original fiction.
