TOKYO – The teen romantic drama “Blue Spring Ride” topped the Japanese box office for the weekend of Dec. 13-14.

Based on Io Sakisaka’s hit comic about a girl who is determined to reset her life in high school, but meets an old flame who upsets her calculations, the picture earned $2.05 million from 210,000 admissions at 307 screens.

Meanwhile, last weekend’s number one, “The Last: Naruto the Movie,” slipped one notch, while boosting its cumulative past the JPY1 billion ($8.4 million) mark.

Debuting at number three was “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies,” which took $2.4 million on 195,000 admissions from 644 screens. This was 5% lower than the 2013 “Desolation of Smaug,” but 35% better than the 2012 “An Unexpected Journey.” The picture’s B.O. earnings exceeded that of “Blue Spring Ride”, but not its admissions or screen average.

Bowing at number four was the latest instalment in the long-running “Masked Rider” costumed superhero franchise, with $1.72 admissions on 167,000 admissions from 295 screens.

Filling out the top five was newcomer “Aikatsu!,” an anime based on a popular arcade card game for girls that also morphed into a TV anime series. Opening on 151 screens, the pic recorded $1.45 million on 157,000 admissions.
