Kailasam Balachander, a well-known Tamil filmmaker, died Tuesday in hospital. He was 84.
He worked as director, screenwriter and producer with credits including “Aval Ora Thodar Kathai,” “Avargal,” and “47 Natkal” and earned numerous National Film Awards, seven Filmfars awards and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor.
He was also known as a significant talent spotter and was responsible for discovering Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth, among others.
