China Box Office: ‘Witch’ Wins Weekend, ‘Mansions’ Expands

HONG KONG – Martial arts fantasy “The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom” held on to the box office crown in China at the weekend. But the best performance was that of “Brick Mansions,” the Canadian actioner which climbed from fifth place to second spot in an otherwise quiet session.

The Fan Bingbing-starring “Witch” earned $19.6 million (RMB121 million), a drop of 45% compared with its opening frame. After 11 days the film’s cumulative total stands at $55.6 million (RMB343 million).

Brick Mansions,” (pictured) starring the late Paul Walker, saw its screen count more than double and its gross climb by 75%, from $7.71 million (RMB47.6 million) in its opening sessions to $13.5 million (RMB83.3 million) in the latest weekend. Its 10-day cumulative stands at $21.2 million (RMB131 million).

“Continent,” the nostalgic road movie by car racer and blogger Han Han, dropped from second to third spot as it added $12.6 million (RMB77.9 million) in its third weekend, giving it an 18 day total of $95.1 million (RMB587 million).

Hong Kong-made romance “Girls” (aka “Girlfriends”) added $11.1 million (RMB68.4 million) in its second weekend, taking its 12 day gross to $28.2 million (RMB174 million).

Chinese-made 3D animation “Legend of Qin” entered the chart in fifth place with a three-day score of $5.92 million (RMB36.5 million).

Hollywood studio films will be back on the agenda in the coming week with “How To Train Your Dragon 2” releasing on Thursday (Aug. 14), and “Pompeii” gets its debut on Friday (Aug. 15).
