‘Captain America’ Easily Conquers Video Sales

In a big week for new releases, five newcomers made it into the top 10 on Nielsen VideoScan’s weekly overall disc sales chart for the week ending Sept. 14.

Walt Disney Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the action sequel that grossed nearly $260 million in U.S. theaters, was an easy winner, debuting at No. 1.

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Brick Mansions,” a crime drama with a domestic box office gross of just $20.4 million, bowed at No. 2, although it only sold about 8.2% as many units as the “Captain America” followup.

Sony Pictures’ “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” slipped another notch to No. 3, while the previous week’s top seller, the Lionsgate sports drama “Draft Day,” fell to No. 4.

Rounding out the top five was another newcomer, “Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season,” from Warner Bros.

The two other new releases that made it into the top 10 on the First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, Blu-ray Disc and DVD combined, were 20th Century Fox’s “Homeland: The Complete Third Season,” at No. 6, and Walt Disney Studios’ “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Complete First Season,” which bowed at No. 8.

Meanwhile, another Disney release, “Frozen,” celebrated its 26th week on the chart by moving up two notches to No. 7.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, the top four sellers are the same, with “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Complete First Season” rounding out the top five.

According to Nielsen research, “Captain America” was the runaway Blu-ray Disc winner, with the high-definition version accounting for 60% of first-week unit sales. “Brick Mansions” generated 37% of total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “The Other Woman,” from 20th Century Fox, moved up to No. 1 in its third week of wide availability at all rental outlets, including Netflix and Redbox, which get new releases from Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. 28 days after street date. “Draft Day” slipped to No. 2 after bowing at No. 1 the previous week.

“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Moms’ Night Out” and “Divergent” remained at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, the same positions they held the prior week.
