The feature debut of Gerard Johnstone, “Housebound” played to critical acclaim when it made its U.S. preem at Austin’s SXSW Festival with scribes asking if “Housebound”repped a comecak for New Zealand horror-comedy.
Starring Morgana O’Reilly, Rima Te Wiati and Glen-Paul Waru, “Housebound” turns on wayward teen Kylie Bucknell (O’Reilly) who is sent under house-arrest to live in the home she grew up in. There, she encounters something even more terrifying than her superstitious blabbermouth mother Miriam (Te Wiata).
Nicolas Brigaud-Robert of Films Distribution commented: that “Housebound” is “very fresh, both funny and witty but also unpredictable and full of suspense. It truly delivers and will no doubt be an audience pleaser around the world.“
“Housebound” was funded by the New Zealand Film Commission and produced by Luke Sharpe for Semi-Professional Pictures and executive produced by Ant Timpson, producer of “The ABCs of DEath,” Daniel Story and Chris Lambert.
The deal was brokered between Sebastien Beffa of Films Distribution and Ant Timpson and Luke Sharpe, alongside the New Zealand Film Commission.
“We are looking forward extremely to our first collaboration with Semi-Professional Pictures and our second film with Ant Timpson with whom we have worked with before on ‘ABCs of Death,’“ Beffa added.
XLrator Media has acquired U.S. sales rights and plans a theatrical and day-and-date VOD release.
