CANNES: Adrian Grenier Producing Whale Documentary ’52’ with Worldview Financing

Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce Joshua Zeman’s lonely whale documentary “52” with Adrian Grenier on board to produce.

Producers are Lucy Cooper at Alldayeveryda, Grenier at his Reckless Prods. and Zeman of Gigantic Pictures. Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Sarah E. Johnson and Maria Cestone will exec produce.

“I’m honored to be part of the Worldview and Alldayeveryday team who can see the importance of making films like ’52’ and who will put their muscle behind such a mythic quest,” Grenier said.

The “Entourage” star joined with Burt Marcus to produce the 2012 documentary “How to Make Money Selling Drugs,” directed by Matt Cooke (pictured above with Grenier).

Zeman is directing “52” from his own script about the search for a mysterious whale that has lived its life in solitude because it calls out at 52 Hertz — a sonic frequency much higher than that of the blue whale or fin whale. Filming will begin in fall and include a seven-week expedition in the Pacific Ocean to search for the whale.

“I’m so humbled by the scope of this adventure,” Zeman said. “There is still so much mystery in our oceans and the plight of this Lonely Whale speaks to something very human in all of us; the need to connect and be heard.”

“52” is the second documentary for Worldview after “The Square,” which was nominated for an Oscar, won awards from the Toronto Intl. Film Festival and the International Documentary Assn. and was acquired by Netflix.

Worldview’s drama “The Search,” directed by Michel Hazanavicius and starring Berenice Bejo and Annette Bening, is premiering in competition at Cannes. The company recently announced a five-year partnership with The Weinstein Company.
