The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Bruce Dern with the Modern Master Award at this year’s ceremony. The Adobe-sponsored tribute will take place on Feb. 8 at the Arlington Theatre.

“We’re deeply humbled and grateful to Bruce Dern for accepting this award. He’s not only a Modern Master, he’s a hero,” SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said in a statement.

Emma Thompson, who was originally slated to receive the award, could no longer attend the ceremony because she will be rehearsing in London for the New York Philharmonic’s staging of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”

The Modern Master Award is the fest’s highest honor. It was created to pay tribute to an individual who has enriched culture through his/her multifaceted accomplishments in the motion picture industry.

The Film Festival takes place Jan. 30 – Feb. 9, 2014.
