Boxing Movie ‘Goat’ Wins Works in Progress Prize at Karlovy Vary Film Fest

Ivan Ostrochovsky’s “Koza” (Goat), which centers on a former Olympic boxer who is forced to go back into the ring in order to provide for his family, won the Works in Progress prize Tuesday at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival .

The project, which will receive €10,000 ($13,600) in services from Barrandov Studios, is produced by Jiri Konecny of Endorfilm in the Czech Republic and Marek Urban and Ostrochovsky for Sentimentalfilm in the Slovak Republic.

Ostrochovsky previously co-directed the docu feature “Velvet Terrorists,” which picked up prizes at Karlovy Vary last year and in Berlinale’s Forum section this year.

“Goat” was one of 15 projects from Central and Eastern Europe pitched Monday as part of the festival’s industry program. The other short-listed projects were Tomasz Mielnik’s Polish-Czech comedy “Journey to Rome” and “The Gulls,” a drama about the lonely wife of a fisherman, set on the Caspian Sea coast.

The jury, which comprising Mihai Chirilov from the Transylvania Intl. Film Festival in Romania, Guillaume de Seille of Arizona Productions in France and Niloufar Siassi of Fortissimo Film Sales in Netherlands, said in a statement: “The award goes to the strong characters, sad and funny visual style from a director able to incorporate light-weight touches into heavy-weight narrative with crystal-clear and convincing presentation.”

In all 51 projects were submitted to the section for consideration.
