With its broadened appeal to non-families, Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s 3D animated hit “The Lego Movie” outgrossed four new entries to become the far-and-away box office winner, estimating $48.8 million Friday-Sunday, down a mere 29%, with a whopping $60 million through President’s Day.
In just two weeks, “The Lego Movie” has collected a total projected $140.3 million domestically, ahead of Universal’s “The Lorax,” which saw a similar box office trajectory in early March 2012.
Box office pundits are projecting overall holiday box office to be ahead of the same frame last year. That said, Valentine’s day falling on a Friday gave this year a considerable edge.
Sony-Screen Gems’ “About Last Night,” which won the Valentine’s day derby with nearly $13 million, also came away the leader among the weekend’s new entries, grossing a solid $30.2 million in four days, while the studio’s other ’80s remake “RoboCop” misfired with $30 million in six days. Imax, though, contributed a solid $4.5 million from only 340 domestic locations.
There is more hope for “RoboCop” internationally, however.

The film, which received a decent ‘B+’ CinemaScore among Stateside auds, nears $96 million worldwide through Monday and is expected to top out at around $200 million overseas, with optimistic projections in countries yet to bow including China, Japan and Brazil.
Meanwhile, Universal’s “Endless Love,” the third reboot from the 1980s to bow this weekend, fell in line with pre-weekend expectations, grossing $15.2 million in four days.
Failing to gain much couples’ support, Warner’s time-jumping weeper “Winter’s Tale” grossed just $7.8 million Friday-Sunday, with around $8.5 million over the long holiday weekend.
