Blumhouse, Ivanhoe Strike Genre Film Partnership With India’s Phantom

The deal calls for the production of a minimum of ten films over five years.

HONG KONG — Jason Blum’s Blumhouse has pacted with financier Ivanhoe Pictures and Indian indie production house Phantom to make a slate of Indian genre movies.

The deal calls for the production of a minimum of ten films over five years.

Ivanhoe Pictures, the recently launched Asian focused film and television production company, will finance the slate. Phantom, which describes itself as India’s first director led production house. Blumhouse (“Paranormal Activity,” “The Purge,” “Insidious” and “Sinister”) will help oversee the creative, bringing its expertise creating horror franchise.

The films will be released in India under the Blumhouse brand.

The permutations for international distribution are multiple and the partners said that international distribution will be announced at a future date. Blumhouse this summer signed a 10-year first look deal with Universal. Blum also has a long-standing relationship with IM Global, which is majority owned by India’s Reliance ADA Group and represents the Indian film slate of Reliance Entertainment.

Ivanhoe has a multi-year co-financing arrangement with Fox International Pictures, spanning a large proportion of FIP’s Asian production output. FIP’s slate includes “Bombay Velvet,” the largest film to date to be made by Anurag Kashyap (“Gangs of Wasseypur,” “That Girl in Yellow Boots”), co-founder of Phantom.

Kashyap has committed to direct one of the films on the Blumhouse-Ivanhoe slate.

Ivanhoe is run by Los Angeles-based John Penotti on behalf of Singapore-based billionaire Robert Friedland and has committed over $130 million to the FIP deal which spans local language pictures in China, India, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.  It is also partnered with “Hunger Games” producer Nina Jacobson to finance and produce Kevin Kwan’s comedic best-seller, “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Phantom is headed by four film-makers Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena who have to date released three movies “Lootera,” “Hasee toh Phasee” and surprise hit” Queen.” The company’s slate includes Kashyap’s “Ugly,” “NH10” and “Ghoomketu.”

“[This is a] first of its kind association in the Indian Sub Continent and [we] couldn’t be more excited about our collaboration with the progressive creative forces of Blumhouse and Ivanhoe,” said Phantom’s Madhu Mantena.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Ivanhoe Pictures by CFO Suraj Gohill, CAA for Blumhouse and CAA KWAN for Phantom.
