Afghanistan Sends ‘Love’ to the Oscars

Writer-Director Jamshid Mahmoudi’s debut feature, the Persian-language “A Few Cubic Meters of Love” (“Chand Metre Moka’ab Eshgh”) is Afghanistan’s entry for the foreign-language Academy Awards category.

Though the film is an Iran-Afghanistan co-production, it has not secured an Iranian release date until after Sept. 30, the last date for Oscar eligibility. Mahmoudi decided to release in Afghanistan before that date, thereby qualifying the film from that country.

The film is set in a shantytown on the outskirts of Teheran where a factory illegally employs Afghan asylum seekers. A love story plays out between a young Iranian worker and the daughter of an Afghan worker.

Mahmoudi’s family found asylum in Iran during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. “This story perfectly sums up my people’s situation. I’ve tried to recount the painful co-existence of our two peoples over three decades through this tale of impossible love,” said Mahmoudi in his director’s note accompanying the film, which picked up directing and screenwriting prizes at the Fajr festival earlier this year.

Aseman-Parvaz Film produced and Dreamlab Films is handling international sales.

“Love” is Afghanistan’s ninth entry in the foreign language category. The country has yet to receive a nomination.
