Sundance: Strand Releasing Acquires Hong Khaou’s ‘Lilting’

Distrib plans for a late summer 2014 release

Strand Releasing has bought U.S. rights to director Hong Khaou’s feature debut “Lilting,” starring Ben Whishaw and Cheng Pei Pei, with plans to release the film later this summer.

“Lilting,” which played in competition in the World section at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the cinematography prize, follows a Cambodian-Chinese mother, played by Pei Pei, who, while mourning the death of her son finds solace in a stranger (Whishaw).

“I’m so thrilled ‘Lilting’ has found a home in Strand Releasing,” said Khaou, whose short film “Spring” debuted at Sundance in 2011. “They have a fearless reputation for releasing strong art-house international films for the US.”

“Lilting” was produced through Film London Microwave, along with Executive Producers Stink, SUMS Film & Media and Bob & Co.  Dominic Buchanan produced.

Variety‘s Justin Chang called the film “a quietly resonant chamber piece about the bond that develops between a Chinese-Cambodian mother and the young British lad who was the ‘best friend’ of her late son.” Strand Releasing specializes in queer cinema, having recently released “Stranger By the Lake,” which also played at this year’s Sundance in the spotlight section.

Protagonist Pictures will screen “Lilting” for international buyers at the Berlin fest’s European Film Market. Artificial Eye holds U.K. rights, while Transmission Films will release the film in Australia.
