Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’ Joins Sundance Film Festival Lineup

The 12-years-in-the-making opus will have its world premiere at the 30th annual Park City event.

In a last-minute but high-profile addition to its 30th annual slate, the Sundance Film Festival has announced that Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” will receive special preview screenings at the upcoming event, which runs Jan. 16-26.

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, “Boyhood” is an unusually ambitious narrative experiment that spans 12 years in the life of a family, focusing on the development of a boy (played by Ellar Coltrane) from childhood to adulthood. Lorelei Linklater (the writer-director’s daughter) plays the protagonist’s sister, with Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke in the roles of their divorced parents.

The film, which had already been tipped by festival-goers for a Park City berth, will have its world premiere at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Eccles Theater, the fest’s largest venue. Its inclusion brings the Sundance lineup to a total of 121 features.

Richard Linklater was at Sundance last year with “Before Midnight,” the latest of several collaborations with Hawke. The other principal actors have also worked with the helmer in the past: Arquette and Coltrane (credited as Ellar Salmon) in “Fast Food Nation,” and Lorelei Linklater in “Waking Life.”
