Iranian Director Hits Out at U.S. Sanctions

Iranian director Rakhshan Bani-Etemad lashed out against U.S. economic sanctions imposed on her country during Thursday’s press conference for her film “Tales,” which depicts social ills in Iran.

“Our children who are sick with diseases such as cancer and multiple sclerosis are paying the direct consequences of the embargo because they cannot get the medicines they need,” Bani-Etemad said. “It’s the Iranian people who are bearing the brunt of these international decisions, which are crippling our economy and making many lives miserable.”

The effects of the U.S. embargo crop up in Bani-Etemad’s hard-hitting film, which screened on the Lido in competition. It provides an unadulterated portrait of Iran, and especially women in Iran, battered by bureaucracy, drug abuse, single motherhood and prostitution, among other problems.

“The condition of women in Iran is that, despite their social and political position, they are resisting. Iranian women are winning,” Bani-Etemad told reporters.
She also said that despite being potentially controversial, she was confident that “Tales” would get distribution in Iran.

The film is being sold by Noori Pictures.
