Cabo San Lucas, Mexico — Mark Kassen is set to direct the gangster comedy “Criminal Empire for Dummies”
Kassen, who directed “Puncture,” will produce with Gremi Films’ Greg Hajdarowicz and Bo Cerba, and Cutting Edge Group’s James Gibb and Henry Boger.
“Warrior” screenwriter Cliff Dorfman will pen the script, with production planned to start in spring 2015.
The deal was signed Saturday at the Los Cabos Film Festival.
The film follows a hustler who rises to the top of the crime underworld by using his own gangster lessons.
“It is very cool that the deal closed at the festival, as this is where James and I first met,” Kassen said. “A year later, we have a terrific script, and a great team backing the film.”
“Mark is a great choice of director for this gangster comedy,” Gibb added. “When were both guests of the film festival last year, Mark showed me some of his experimental work that combines CGI and live action, and I knew immediately that with his level of creativity, he was ideally suited to bring ‘Criminal Empire’ to life.”
A playwright, producer, actor and director, Kassen recently produced and starred in Chris Evans’ “Before We Go” and stars with Sophie Turner and Ray Liotta in the upcoming “Alone,” which he also produced.
CAA, which represents Kassen, packaged the project and will rep domestic rights. Kassen is also represented by Stephen Clarke of Lichter Grossman.
UPDATED: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Gary Oldman was attached to direct. He is not officially attached to this project.
