Niki Caro is set to direct “Callas,” about the relationship between legendary opera singer Maria Callas and billionaire Aristotle Onassis.

Caro is also writing the script.

Caro is currently in post-production on “McFarland,” set to be released by Disney in the fall.

“I have a great fascination for Maria Callas, who was such a powerful woman and artist, but also troubled and stuck in this very destructive relationship,” said Caro.

The film is set up as a European/Australian co-production, to be produced by Gudio, Nicola and Marco De Angelis of the De Angelis Group (Italy) and Rene Bastian and Linda Moran of Belladonna Prods. (New York) with Brett Thornquest of Eclectic Vision (Australia) co-financing.

Lensing will begin in late fall in Italian, French and Czech Republic locations.

The producers are currently in discussions with key cast.
