Bulgarian Pic ‘Garden’ Earns Top Prize at When East Meets West

"Garden" beat 21 other projects from 15 countries

ROME – The fourth When East Meets West pitching and co-prod confab wrapped Wednesday in Trieste, Italy, with Bulgarian producer Martichka Bozhilova’s project “Endless Garden” picking up the top nod.

“Garden,” about a woman who withdraws from the outside world into her flower shop, is being set up as the feature film debut of Bulgarian stage director and actor Galin Stoev.

The Bulgarian dramedy beat 21 other projects from 15 countries to nab the Trieste event’s top development nod, provided by Trieste-based Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual fund. The co-prod confab takes place during the Trieste Film Festival.

Bozhilova is shepherding “Garden” through her Sofia-based Agitprop shingle known, among other titles, for docus “Dad Made Dirty Movies,” and “Rules of Single Life.”

Companies and entities attending the Jan. 20-22 meet, which aims to help Eastern European producers find co-prod partners, included Gallic sales agents Wild Bunch and Rezo Films, Fortissimo Films, Germany’s Rise and Shine world sales, the Macedonian Film Fund, and Eurimages.
