Universal Pictures International Entertainment has acquired Kristian Levring’s western “The Salvation” for distribution in Latin America, Eastern Europe and South Africa.
The movie, which is sold by TrustNordisk and world premiered out of competition at Cannes, is a 19th-century-set Scandinavian Western starring Mads Mikkelsen as a Danish settler who is on a journey to avenge his family.
Penned by Anders Thomas Jensen (“In a Better World”) and Levring, “The Salvation” also stars Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt, Eric Cantona and Jonathan Pryce.
The deal was negotiated by Susan Wendt, TrustNordisk’s head of sales.
“There is no doubt that ‘The Salvation’ has found a perfect home at UPIE who we are sure will give the film the best possible launch. This also strongly indicates that the international market place is more than ready for a western of Scandinavian origin”, said Wendt.
Pic was produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa Entertainments33 ApS. South Africa’s Spier Films and U.K.’s Forward Films co-produced.
IFC Films previously acquired North American rights to “The Salvation.”
