Michael Pitt Starrer ‘I Origins’ to Open Karlovy Vary

The Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival will open with the international premiere of Mike Cahill’s “I Origins,” which will be attended by the film’s lead actor Michael Pitt, Cahill and actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

Pic enters on a young scientist whose work investigates the human eye. His research leads him to the discovery of surprising links between the human physiognomy and psyche, with implications bordering on the mystical.

The film garnered a great deal of attention at this year’s Sundance film festival, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan prize for films focusing on science, and was picked up by Fox Searchlight for worldwide distribution.

The film marked out Cahill, who won the same prize at Sundance three years ago for “Another Earth,” as a promising filmmaker to watch.

Pitt previously attended Karlovy Vary in 2005, when he presented Gus Van Sant’s Last Days.”

Pitt broke through in teen series “Dawson’s Creek.” In 2000, he appeared in Gus Van Sant’s “Finding Forrester,” and crime film “Murder by Numbers” two years later.

He took the lead role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Dreamers” in 2003, and appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller “The Village” in 2004, among other parts.

In 2005, Pitt renewed his collaboration with Van Sant in “Last Days,” and played in Tom DiCillo’s “Delirious” in 2006, which opened Karlovy Vary in 2007.

The romantic historical drama “Silk” in 2007 saw Pitt in the lead role alongside Keira Knightley. In the same year, Michael Haneke cast him in the U.S. version of “Funny Games.”

Recent television appearances have included “Boardwalk Empire” and “Hannibal.”

He is set to star in “Criminal Activities” alongside John Travolta.

Berges-Frisbey, who was born in Barcelona to a Catalan father and a French-American mother, has lived in Paris since her childhood. She began her acting career in 2007, followed by appearances in several French and Spanish films, such as Daniel Auteuil’s “The Well-Digger’s Daughter,” and Xavier Villaverde’s “The Sex of the Angels.” She made her Hollywood debut as the mermaid Syrena in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in 2011.
