Leading Czech Filmmaker Alice Nellis to Script ‘Even Mice Belong in Heaven’

Project pitched at Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival

Czech writer-director Alice Nellis, whose film “Revival” won the audience award at Karlovy Vary last year, has come on board as the scriptwriter for animated feature “Even Mice Belong in Heaven.”

The project was pitched at Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival as part of the fest’s Mifa industry program.

Nellis is one of the Czech Republic’s leading filmmakers, and has won awards at the world’s top festivals. Her credits include “Mamas and Papas,” which won the narrative prize at the Hamptons fest, and was described in its Variety review as a “highly intelligent” pic.

“Even Mice Belong in Heaven” is to be adapted from the novel by Iva Prochazkova, who will act as a script consultant.

The story centers on two mortal enemies, a mouse and a fox, who, after an accident, meet in animal heaven. They lose their natural instincts and become best friends. Their wish to stay together comes true when they are reborn on earth, but in opposite roles.

The project is being produced by Vladimir Lhotak at Fresh Films, and is to be directed by Denisa Grimmova Abrhamova and Noro Drziak.

Grimmova Abrhamova, who combines her helming role with oversight of design and will be the co-author of the script, was nominated for a Czech Lion award for her work as a designer on puppet feature “Fimfarum 3.”

Drziak, who helps look after the design and is the CGI supervisor, won a Czech Lion for “Alois Nebel,” on which he was the technical director.

Production is set to begin in September 2015, with a release penciled in for autumn 2017.
