Bernardo Bertolucci will head the jury of the Connect4Climate online film festival, a new competition for filmmakers which aims to address the planet’s pressing climate change issues.

The new initiative of the World Bank and the Italian Ministry of the Environment has been gathering entries, some of which are on how communities, especially low-income ones, are being affected by climate change and how they are dealing with climate challenges. It is also sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The competition received a phenomenal 230 entries from 70 countries before its April 1 deadline.

As part of this initiative a seminar was held in January during the Palm Springs Film Festival with fifteen international directors, including Marc Forster, to discuss ways in which the film industry can raise awareness about the risks of climate change and promote actions to reduce global warming.

They endorsed the idea of establishing a Green Screen Award for films that raise consciousness about climate change.
