Berlin: ‘Goal Of The Dead’ Scores for Films Distribution (EXCLUSIVE)

International distributors will be releasing the film day and date

Films Distribution has enlisted a flurry of buyers for “Goal of the Dead,” the zombie soccer bloodbath helmed by Benjamin Rocher and Thierry Poiraud.

Rocher’s follow-up to “The Horde,” “Goal” was acquired by Metrodome (U.K.), Core Media Group (Germany), Korea (Line Tree), Hong Kong (Sundream), Turkey (Bir Film), Belgium (Cineart), as well as the Netherlands and Austria. It was previously acquired by Nikkatsu for Japan.

The two-part film centers around a French Olympic football team who visits a small village in Northern France to play a crucial game in the run-up to the World Cup. But as the Apocalypse looms, an epidemic quickly spreads and transforms the players, spectators and inhabitants into strange and enraged creatures.

Films Distribution co-founder Nicolas Brigaud-Robert said international distributors are aiming for a day-and-date release in theaters and on VOD in time for the soccer World Cup in June. In France, where the release window schedule is the strictest, the film will roll out first in theaters and then become available on VOD for the world cup kick-off. Lastly, it will be released on DVD and air on pay TV in December.

“Distributors understand that theatrical is no longer key nowadays, especially for genre movies like ‘Goal of the Deal,’ so they’re redirecting their marketing spending towards digital and saving on P&A,” said Brigaud-Robert. “‘Goal of the Dead’ is also the perfect kind of film to be released day and date because it’s linked to a global event — the soccer world cup.”

In other EFM-related news, the Paris-based outfit has snatched up French distribution rights to Christian E. Christiansen’s car racing drama “On The Edge,” which plays in Berlin.

Brigaud-Robert said the Copenhagen-set action-thriller “starts out like ‘The Fast And The Furious’ and develops into a meaningful friendship tale.

The film, which world-preemed at Rotterdam and is repped by TrustNordisk, toplines  as two best friends, Martin (Jakob Oftebro) and Nikolaj (Cyron Melville) who enjoy driving fast cars in illegal street races. Their lives are turned upside down after they cause the death of a young girl.

Martin gets convicted while Nikolaj walks free.

“Edge” is produced by Louise Vesth at Zentropa.
