Sundance: AMC/Sundance Channel Global Swoops on Six Sundance Titles

Buys comprise ‘The Disobedient,’ ‘Memphis,’ ‘Liar’s Dice,’ ‘This May Be the Last Time,’ ‘Drunktown’s Finest’ and ‘To Kill a Man’

AMC/Sundance Channel Global, the international division of AMC Networks, has acquired six titles from year’s Sundance Festival to fuel the growth of its fast building international channels around the world .

Unveiled at Park City by Bruce Tuchman president of AMC/Sundance Channel Global.  The acquisitions come as Sundance Channel is seeing its biggest year of growth ever across its international networks and video-on-demand services, the company said Thursday.

“The Disobedient,” “Liar’s Dice,” “Memphis” and “This May Be the Last Time” have been acquired for all territories where the Sundance Channel is seen.

“Drunktown’s Finest” has been picked up for Asia (excluding Malaysia), Benelux, Eastern Europe, France, Iberia and Latin America. AMC/Sundance Channel Global has swooped on “To Kill a Man” for Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

All titles will premiere exclusively on Sundance Channel this Spring. Gail Gendler, senior director of acquisitions, AMC/Sundance Channel Global, negotiated all six deals.

Sundance Channel “shares the same mission as the festival to support the growth of independent film. It also provides a global platform to showcase the compelling work of emerging filmmakers,” Tuchman commented.

“We’re looking forward to providing an even greater choice of high quality independent films along with first run original drama on Sundance Channel in the months ahead.”

Sundance Channel, along with AMC/Sundance Channel Global’s WE tv, a women’s lifestyle channel, has seen exponential growth in its international roll-out over the last 12 months.

Offering exclusive first run movies and original drama such as “Rectify,” AMC/Sundance Channel Global allied with DirecTV Latin America to roll out Sundance Channel on Sept. 17 in seven Latin American countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The channel also just launched for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa in 24 countries.

In Asia, Sundance Channel has been launched on IPTV service LG Korea, its fourth Korean carrier, and has also commenced as a VOD service in Taiwan on Taiwan Mobile and on TrueVisions in Thailand. Further recent new pacts for either its linear channel or VOD service take in France, Belgium, Poland and Hungary.

Buzzed about since it won Locarno’s rough-cut Carte Blanche showcase last August, Chilean Alejandro Fernandez Almendras’ questioning vengeance thriller “To Kill a Man” teases out the motives that really drive a family man to exact terrible retribution on a local barrio delinquent who is terrorizing his family. Spain’s Film Factory handles world sales.

A World Dramatic Competition entry, Serb Mina Djukic’s lushly-lensed “The Disobedient” charts a bicycle trip by two would-be-lovers, former childhood friends, through a Serbian countryside ripe for a romance which never happens. Screening in Sundance’s Next section, Tim Sutton’s sophomore outing “Memphis” stars R & B musician William Earl Beal in a singer’s fated trip through the mythic city of the film’s title. New York’s Visit Films has international on both “The Disobedient” and “Memphis.”

Sold by The Film Sales Co, “Drunktown’s Finest,” from U.S scribe-helmer Sydney Freeland, charts the intersecting lives of three young Native Americans as they come of age on an Indian reservation.

Directed and written by Geetu Mohandas, India’s “Liar’s Dice” turns on a young women searching for her missing husband. Documentary “This May Be the Last Time” plumbs Native American director Sterlin Harjo’s investigation into the origins of the songs inspired by his grandfather’s disappearance in 1962.
