U.S. Indie Titles ‘Listen Up Philip’ and ‘Buzzard’ Set For Locarno Fest Launches

ROME – U.S. indie helmers look set to play prominently at the upcoming 67th Locarno Film Festival where Alex Perry’s Jason Schwartzman-starrer “Listen Up Philip” and Joel Potrykus’ “Buzzard” will both have their international preems.

Both directors are regulars at the Swiss lakeside fest dedicated to indie and cutting edge cinema.

“Listen Up Philip,” a dark comedy in which Schwartzman stars as a young writer dealing with a creative crisis and an unsettled love life, will screen in Locarno’s main competish. Pic, which debuted at Sundance and also stars Jonathan Pryce and Elisabeth Moss, was picked up earlier this week by Tribeca Film for U.S. distribution.

Perry was last at Locarno in 2011 when his “The Color Wheel” screened in the fest’s Filmmakers Of The Present competish.

Buzzard,” which stars Potrykeu’s regular collaborator Joshua Burge as a disaffected temp, bowed Stateside at SXSW and will screen at Locarno in Filmmakers Of The Present.

Potrykus won best new director at Locarno in 2012 for his film “Ape,” also starring Burge.

“We wanted to highlight the welcome return of two directors – not just to signal an obvious continuity with the recent past, but above all because for us the films of Alex Ross Perry and Joel Potrykus are among the most interesting of the recent crop of productions,” said Locarno artistic director Carlo Chatrian in a statement.

“I am sure Potrykus’ surreal comedy and Perry’s maturity of expression will fascinate the Locarno audience, continuing the festival’s long-standing relationship with the U.S.,” he added

Locarno’s full lineup will be announced on July 16.
