Magnolia has acquired all U.S. rights to Danish novelist-turned-helmer Tobias Lindholm’s “A War” from Studiocanal.

Named one of Variety’s 10 directors to watch in 2012, Lindholm previously directed critically acclaimed “R” and “A Hijacking,” and co-wrote Thomas Vinterberg’s “The Hunt.”

“A War” stars Pilou Asbaek as Major Claus Michael Pedersen, a Danish company commander who is accused of war crime upon his return from Afghanistan.

Studiocanal’s head of international sales Anna Marsh said having Lindholm on hand in Cannes to meet buyers proved crucial. “Tobias met some buyers, it went very very well. The clients really believed in him and the script. We also had a mood reels on the stand to help buyers understand Tobias’ vision. It sparked lots of positive reactions.”

Nordisk is producing while its distribution arm will release the movie in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Studiocanal will distribute in France, Germany, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand.
