LONDON — Europa Distribution, which reps more than 140 independent distributors from 28 countries in Europe and beyond, is to host a workshop at the Locarno Film Festival on TV rights deals.

About 40 distributors will take part in the workshop, which will look at the part played by television in the commercial life of an independent film. It is the fifth year in a row that the org has staged a workshop at the fest.

Panelists include Valerie Lardinois (RTBF, Belgium), Karen Byot (Arte, France), Susan Wendt (Trust Nordisk, Denmark, and president of sales company organization Europa Intl.), Fernando Riera (A Contracorriente, Spain) and Silke Wilfinger (Koch Media and The Independents, Germany).

TV acquisitions – or the lack of them, more to the point — have become a serious concern for the distribution sector in Europe, and a threat to the market for independent films there.

Europa Distribution sees the workshop as a chance for professionals both from the TV and the distribution fields “to explore the reasons for such an evolution and to find ideas to facilitate the circulation and exposure of movies” on what is still the most popular medium for audiences to watch films.

The workshop takes place on Aug. 9 from 9:30 to 12:30 a.m.
