Buyers Swarm to Cannes Grand Prix Winner ‘The Wonders’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The Match Factory sells Alice Rohrwacher's pic to multiple territories

LONDON — Alice Rohrwacher’s “Le Meraviglie” (The Wonders), which won the Grand Prix in Cannes, has proved popular with buyers, with sales company The Match Factory inking deals for multiple territories.

Rohrwacher’s sophomore feature, which is about a family of beekeepers in rural Italy struggling to maintain their independence, has been sold to distributors in France, Australia, Benelux, Latin America, ex-Yugoslavia, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Poland and Taiwan, among others.

The Match Factory is following up firm interest from a number of other territories, and expects further deals, including Germany, shortly.

“Le Meraviglie” was produced by Tempesta in Italy in co-production with Switzerland’s Amka Films and Pola Pandora in Germany. Apart from handling international sales for the film at The Match Factory, the company’s managing director Michael Weber also co-produced it through Pola Pandora, in which he holds a share.

“I’m so proud to work with such talented directors like Alice Rohrwacher, who stands for a new wave of cinema from Italy, and Kornel Mundruczo from Hungary, who just won the Prix Un Certain Regard (for ‘White God‘),” Weber said.

The Match Factory’s third Cannes title “Snow in Paradise,” by the debut director Andrew Hulme, has been sold to France and Turkey, so far. The company is following up interest from Asia and North America.

The pic features a standout performance from newcomer Frederick Schmidt as a petty criminal who is at odds with gentrified London East End, and later turns to Islam to find peace. The story is based on the life of Martin Askew, who plays his gangster uncle, Jimmy.
