Franchise Sequels Take Over Film4 Frightfest

Film4 Fright Fest favors obscure series

Casual horror fans may well do a double take upon perusing this year’s Film4 FrightFest lineup and noticing “Wrong Turn 6” nestled in the Discovery Screen section.

Indeed, only dedicated acolytes of direct-to-DVD exploitation fare may be aware that the 2003 Eliza Dushku starrer “Wrong Turn” had spawned a sequel at all, let alone five of them.

The latest installment is the third to be programmed at FrightFest, the kind of fan-oriented event that feeds under-the-radar franchises, briefly realizing their theatrical aspirations before ancillary comes calling. Valeri Milev’s film hits U.S. retail shelves, opportunistically enough, on Oct. 31.

The lineup also includes two sequels nearer the start of their potential franchise lives. Both, however, come with higher festival pedigrees. Norwegian zombie-Nazi return “Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead” unspooled at Sundance, where U.S. rights were picked up by genre and home-format specialists Well Go USA.

Aussie shocker “Wolf Creek 2,” which takes a more self-parodic stance than the acclaimed 2005 slasher, bowed nearly a year ago at Venice; already released on multiple platforms Stateside, Greg McLean’s film heads straight to DVD and DTV in Blighty next month.

If further sequels manifest, they may take a shorter cut to small screens. FrightFest’s loyalty, however, dies hard.
