‘Wild Tales’ Breaks B.O. Record for Warner Bros. in Argentina

SPC pick-up rolls out powerful sales for Film Factory across the world

MADRID – Argentina is going wild over Damian Szifron’s “Wild Tales,” a Special Presentation at Toronto.

But, far from a local comedy, the Cannes competition entry, which boasts impeccable distributor credentials – a Sony Pictures Classics pick-up for North America.; a Warner Bros. Pictures Int’l. buy for Latin America, Spain, and France – has cleaned up most of the world in sales terms via Film Factory Ent.

Germany’s Prokino, Italy’s Lucky Red, the U.K.’s Curzon and Scanbox in Scandinavia are some of the major territory buyers.

In Argentina, distributed by Warner Bros., “Wild Tales” opened to a first-frame 21 million pesos ($2.5 million) and 445,532 admissions, a home-turf all-time record for an Argentine movie. Final figure will probably reach 500,000 when all tix sales are in. Figure, which reps about 65% of total tix sales, bested Universal’s 2013 release of Juan Jose Campanella’s 3D animated feature “Foosball” (17.7 million pesos and 418,280 admissions).

Produced by K & S in Argentina, Telefonica Studios, and Pedro and Agustin Almodovar’s El Deseo in Spain, and a compendium of six stories of flaring violence, “Wild Tales” is played by a top-notch Argentine cast including Ricardo Darin (“The Secret in Their Eyes”, Oscar Martinez (“Empty Nest”), “Leonardo Sbaraglia (“Red Lights,” “King of the Hill”), Erica Rivas (“Tetro”), Rita Cortese (“The Inheritance”), Julieta Zylberberg (“The Invisible Eye”) and Dario Grandinetti (“Talk To Her”).

Argentine Double Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla (“Babel,” “Brokeback Mountain”) composed the score. But more than anything else, it looks as if “Wild Tales’” take on a contemporary society driven by pressure, jealousy, bad manners and resentments to flashpoints of fury, rage and revenge has touched a large nerve in Argentina. First-weekend screenings have sparked not only huge lines for tickets and but five-minute applauses, according to reports.

While Argentina is hit by spiraling inflation and pernicious currency controls, top-echelon distributors have seen Szifron’s as easily translatable to the rest of an ever-more stressed out world.

SPC also grabbed rights to Australia/New Zealand. A Japanese deal has just closed with the distributor Film Factory has also closed Benelux (Cineart), Switzerland (Pathe Films), Poland (Gutek), Israel (Lev), CIS (Cinema Prestige) and South Korea (Doki).

Aerofilms (Czech Republic), Pris (Portugal), Umut Sanat/Ozen (Turkey), Spentzos (Greece), MCF Megacom (ex-Yugoslavia), Edko (Hong Kong), Creative Century (Taiwan), Picture Works (India), Suraya (Malaysia) and Encore (airlines) are among other buyers.

“Wild Tales” will also play Spain’s San Sebastian Fest before an Oct. 17 WB bow. Prospects look bullish.
