“Divergent,” which opens nationwide on March 21, sold nearly half of Fandango’s total ticket sales during its first day, outpacing the nearest seller by nearly five-fold.
“Its first-day ticket sales are showing all the signs of a blockbuster in the making,” said Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger. “Divergent,” starring Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet and Theo James, was listed as one of the top five most anticipated movies of 2014, according to Fandango.
Box office pundits anticipate the film will have a $50 million-plus domestic opening, which could lead to a cume in the ballpark of $130 million-$140 million, depending on how broadly the film plays beyond its core fanbase.
Summit recently began ratcheting up the film’s marketing presence by partnering with Imax for an exclusive fan poster, which auds of the first Imax shows will receive.
