Down just 29%, if predictions hold true, Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Movie” is looking at almost $50 million in three days this weekend.
“Lego Movie,” co-financed and co-produced by Village Roadshow, took in $13 million Friday and stands to make just north of $60 million during the long weekend, handily beating a crowded slate of newcomers all vying for Valentine’s Day auds.
In the lead is “About Last Night,” Sony-Screen Gems’ R-rated raunchy romance starring Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy, earning $13 million Friday and headed to about $36 million in four days. Hart competes with himself this weekend as “Ride Along” enters its fifth frame, when it will likely drop to sixth at the domestic marketplace.
Counterprogramming the romantic entries, including its own, Sony also bowed “Robocop” this weekend to less-than-commanding results: the actioner earned $7 million Friday and will just break $20 million in four days, and about $25 million in its first six days in theaters (it bowed Wednesday to $2.8 million.
Budgeted at a reported $100 million and co-financed by MGM, “Robocop” is looking at a lackluster bow made somewhat better by overseas grosses. It opened early in 27 international markets, earning more than $40 million so far.
The frame’s other openers looked to ride Friday’s Valentine’s wave with just OK results. Universal’s “Endless Love” slightly outdid “Robocop” Friday with $7.3 million, but will likely fall past the actioner for fourth this frame just on its heels at about $20 million.
Warner Bros.’ “Winters Tale,” however, will probably land down in seventh place with about $10 million through Monday.
All this frame’s openers likely saw their strongest performances on Valentine’s Day Friday, whereas “The Lego Movie” has legs throughout the holiday weekend with stronger family appeal.
