Michael De Luca Grateful But Baffled by ‘Captain Phillips’ Nominations

Poised to re-enter the executive suite as president of production for Columbia Pictures, producer Michael De Luca is simultaneously “grateful” and “baffled” by the simultaneous Oscar nods and snubs for “Captain Phillips.”

Though “Phillips” netted noms for best picture, supporting actor Barkhad Abdi (pictured with De Luca), adapted screenplay, editing, sound editing and sound mixing, star Tom Hanks and helmer Paul Greengrass weren’t recognized.

“I’m a little baffled by it, Paul (Greengrass) and Tom (Hanks) are the twin engines and craftsmen of this movie. They were our leaders and none of us would be in this conversation without them. But it’s hard not to be grateful too,” said De Luca.

Beginning early next month, De Luca told Variety he will give up producing new projects, although he will remain involved on several existing Sony projects and also finish up his tenure as a producer on Focus Features/Universal’s high-profile “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which is currently shooting in Vancouver. (Michael De Luca Productions has had a production and development deal with Columbia Pictures since its formation in March 2004).

“It’s a different life and it’s got different rewards, but my god, I’m the luckiest man in the world to go out in a season like this with a film like this. It’s more than I hoped for,” De Luca added.
