Long Road to ‘Dallas’

‘Dallas Buyers Club” scripter Craig Borten established the spine of his screenplay 22 years ago when he travelled to Dallas to interview the dying Ron Woodroof. He finished off a draft and spent years pitching the project before getting a fresh set of eyes from Melisa Wallack, who became co-scripter. Even then, it was still a decade before director Jean-Marc Vallee first called “action” on the project.

“People loved the script, but said, ‘I don’t know if anybody wants to see that subject matter,’ ” Wallack told Variety.
