‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Apologizes for Controversial 9/11 Poster

Following backlash for a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” poster depicting the titular turtles jumping from an exploding building above the “September 11” Australian release date, Paramount Australia has issued an apology and removed the tweet containing the poster (pictured below).

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Poster

“We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia,” Paramount said in a statement issued to Buzzfeed. “Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offense and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use.”

Paramount Pictures Australia tweeted the image from their Twitter account, @ParamountAU, on Tuesday. It didn’t take long for Twitter users to sign off on the poster, calling it insensitive to put the image with the 9/11 date.

The image was promptly removed from Paramount Australia’s Twitter and Facebook accounts after complaints began to roll in. Neither social media account has addressed the controversy beyond the statement.

For some other commentators the controversy added to the current debate about why some Hollywood films do not have Australian releases that are concurrent with their North American outings. The Michael Bay-produced film releases next week (Aug 8) in North America, 31 days ahead of its Australian distribution. Such gaps are said to encourage online movie piracy.
