SHANGHAI – Leading Taiwanese film director Chang Tso-chi has been sentenced to three years and ten months in jail for raping a woman in Taipei last year.

Chang, who has directed films including “Soul of A Demon” and “10+10,” was found guilty by a Taipei District Court.

The court ruled that he raped a woman playwright, with the surname Lin, when she was under the influence of alcohol at a party in May 2013 being given by Chang at his studio on completion of his latest movie “A Time in Quchi” (pictured).

Chang initially denied the charges, but admitted the act after DNA evidence was produced. He since pleaded mitigating circumstances and also said that he had been misrepresented. Chang can appeal against the verdict.

Chang has been a National Culture and Arts Foundation winner and also heads the Chang Tso-chi Film Studio.
