HONG KONG — “Happy New Year,” the Bollywood caper movie directed by Farah Khan and starring Shah Rukh Khan, has run off to gross of $17.9 million (INR1.088 billion) in its first weekend at the Indian box office.
Production company, Red Chillies says that total came from INR1.041 billion in Hindi-language releases and a further INR29.2 million in Telugu dubbed versions and INR18.4 million in Tamil.
The Diwali period is traditionally one of the biggest at the Indian box office. In its first day on Friday (Oct. 24) “Happy New Year” managed a record breaking $7.3 million (INR 450 million).
The film also stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani.
Set between India and Dubai, “Happy New Year” is about a motley bunch that must enter the finals of a global dance competition in order to get close to diamonds they plan to heist.
